DWP's Saturday Social Night at the DWP Dance Studio in Preston is on Saturday 2nd June 2012.  Here's your chance to dance all your favourite Ballroom (Waltz, Quickstep, Foxtrot, Tango), Latin (Cha Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba), and sequence dances on one of the best dance floors in the area.  You've seen the Stars on Strictly, and with practice you can look just as good as them!  Your hosts, Jason and Shemayne, will be on hand to play all your favourite tunes.  Tell us what dances and music you want, and we'll be happy to play them.  An enjoyable and relaxing evening for everyone for £5.

Tower Inferno with live Salsa band Dorance Lorza & Sexteto Cafe -  Saturday 9th June 2012

Tower Inferno salsa event on Saturday 9th June 2012 from 8pm to 2am at Blackpool Tower Ballroom.  Doors open at 7.30pm.  International Salsa band Dorance Lorza & Sexteto Cafe will be playing the very best tunes to keep you on the dance floor. 

Dorance Lorza is an accomplished Colombian multi instrumentalist, arranger and producer and has played a formative role in the careers of many Latin artists including Henry Fiol, Fruko and Los Del Caney and Los Niches.  Sexteto Cafe are a highly experience seven piece Latin band led by Lorza and have performed at Latin clubs and festivals throughout the UK, Ireland and abroad.  Sexteto Cafe have released three albums, "Cafe Salsa", "Salsa Pa'To" and most recently "10 years of Salsa" all to critical acclaim.

Dance the night away in the world's most famous ballroom, as seen on Strictly Come Dancing, along with your Tower Inferno team Jason and Shemayne and Rohan.  Guest teachers and DJs to be announced soon.

Dance with Passion and Rohan Brown (Salsafever) present the first "Northern Exposure" mini salsa weekender on Friday 7th December and Sat 8th December 2012 at the Norbreck Castle Hotel, Queen's Promenade, Blackpool, FY2 9AA. 

The term Northern Exposure was phrased in order to highlight some of the very best Salsa personalities and entertainers that the north has to offer. So you know its going to be a party of all parties.  This event is to take place over 2 nights and 1 full day of lessons and entertainment.

Residents can check in to the Norbeck Hotel from 3pm where you will get your weekend pass and information for the weekend.  Then you can relax till the evening class which begins at 8.30pm.

9.30pm Northern DJs will play the very best of all the dance tunes from Bachata, Kizomba, Cuban, to New York till the early hours of the morning.

Saturday 8th December Day - Classes

10.30am till 5.30pm Workshops in Cross body salsa (On1/On2), Cuban turns, Rueda, Kizomba, Bachata, Zumba, Waltz.  There will be 3 teachers teaching each hour.

Saturday 8th December Evening - Band Night

8.30pm There will also be a fun evening warm up class for evening visitors.
10.30pm  Dance the night away to one of the UK's best bands live band in an Edwardian style ballroom with a fantastic sprung wooden dance floor.

55th Blackpool Junior Dance Festival - 9th-15th April 2012 - DWP Juvenile 8 and Junior 8 - Highest placed English teams!

DWP achieved huge success at this year's British 'Open to the World' Dance Championships in both the couples and formation competitions.

Congratulations to the DWP Juvenile 8 Couple Team - 'Glam Rock' and the DWP Junior 8 Couple Team - 'Viva Elvis' who were the highest placed English teams at the 55th Blackpool Junior Dance Championships on Saturday 14th April and Sunday 15th April 2012, with both teams coming 3rd overall.  Two of the judges placed the Viva Elvis team first!  Glam Rock came 3rd out of 14 teams.  Viva Elvis came 3rd out of 13 teams.

Well done also to both the DWP Junior 4 Couple Teams 'Around the World' and 'Harmony', and the DWP Juvenile 4 Couple Team - 'Bega Girls' on making the semi-finals. All 3 teams just missed out on getting to the finals.  Bega Girls got full marks in their first round and came 7th out of 19 teams.   'Around the World' and 'Harmony' produced near faultless performances in the first round with at least one judge giving each teams full marks.  Around the World came 9th and Harmony came 10th out of 21 teams.  There was only a single point between Around the World and Harmony.

Congratulations to Connor Parkinson and Cecilie Engsig who got into the top 48 out of 268 in the couples competition.  A fabulous result for a couple who have just started dancing together.

87th Blackpool Dance Festival - 24th May - 1st June 2012 - Blackpool Winter Gardens

The 87th Blackpool Dance Festival is being held at the Empress Ballroom at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool from Thursday 24th May to Friday 1st June 2012.  The Festival is one of the World's most prestigious dance festivals.  It covers Ballroom and Latin American dancing, incorporating the British Open Championships for Adult Amateur and Professional couples, plus Latin and Ballroom Formation Teams.  The Latin Formation competition is usually held on the last Friday of the Championships.  More information can be found at www.blackpooldancefestival.com.

British National Dance Championships - 15th-17th November 2012 - Blackpool Winter Gardens

DWP Street Teams win titles at Sanderson Competition

Congratulations to the DWP under 12s Street Feet team and under 18s Predators who both won titles at the Sanderson's Street competition.  We are now opening the doors to new members of our street teams, so get in touch in you are interested in joining our team.
 

Zumba every Monday and Thursday - Join the Party!

DWP is the home of Zumba in Preston with fully qualified Zumba teachers Jason and Joanne.  They will be holding some special Zumba workshops, meaning double the fun and double the party!  Zumba classes are every Monday at 8.30pm and every Thursday at 6pm and 8.15pm.  Beginners are especially welcome. Latin formation teams -  New members welcome

Work has started on the new routines for all our Latin formation teams for Juveniles (11 and under), Juniors (12 to 16) and adults.  We are pleased to announce that this year's themes include Cirque du Soleil's "Viva Elvis", "Around the World" and "Glam Rock".  It promises to be a great year.  Our Juvenile 4 and 8 couple teams were the highest placed English teams at this year's British 'Open to the World' Championship.  We are still taking new members for all our teams.  So, whether you have done formation before, or fancy giving it a try, contact us at the studio if you are interested in joining our successful teams.  The Gallery has photographs of the DWP formations teams.

DWP Cheeleading Teams win titles at UKA Competition.

The DWP cheerleading teams has had continued success at the latest UKA Cheer competition at Blackpool Winter Gardens.  The DWP under 7s and DWP under 9s won the titles.  The DWP under 13s and DWP under 15s were runners up, and the DWP under 11s and the DWP Adults came 3rd place these.  These were a great set of results as all teams had new routines.  If you want to join our Cheer or Street teams then get in touch.

Intermediate Salsa with Mckenzie and Emma every Thursday 9pm

There is a new intermediate salsa class on Thursdays at 9pm with Mckenzie Young and Emma Sumner.  With the classes structured around leading and following, Mckenzie and Emma will be teaching the latest salsa turn patterns with style.  A Salsa and Bachata social dance follows after the class.

Blackpool Junior Dance Festival Results - DWP Double English Champions 2011

Well done to all the DWP Juvenile and Junior Latin American formation teams who on Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May 2011 competed in the British 'Open to the World' Junior Formation Dance Championships at the 54th Blackpool Junior Dance Festival at the Empress Ballroom in the Blackpool Winter Gardens.

In both the Juvenile 4 Couple and Juvenile 8 Couple competitions DWP were the highest placed English team!  Many congratulations to all the Juveniles for being English Champions twice!  This is a fabulous result. As usual, the talented Welsh dance schools dominated the finals.  

Very well done to our Juniors, with the DWP Junior 4 Couple Team - 'Happy Feet' just missing out on getting to the final by 1 place.  The DWP Junior 8 Couple Team - 'The Beat' danced phenomenally well, but were competing against other Dance Schools who were fielding multiple teams and had dancers sometimes much older than our own, including a team from Hungary.

Jason and Shemayne are very proud of all the Juveniles and Juniors and would like to thank all the parents, family and friends who all year have given their support that has enabled DWP to be double English Champions in 2011.

Background Information on Scoring system used

In the first two rounds (first round and semi-final) each of the nine judges are allowed to award up to 20 marks giving a total of 180 marks.  A performance with no mistakes would be awarded 180 marks.  Depending on the number of teams in competition, either the top 9 or 12 teams then go through to semi-final (or Round 2) where again each judge again awards up to 20 marks and the best 6 teams go into the final.  No marks from the first round count towards the second round.

The marking in the final is different to the previous two rounds.  In the final each judges has to rank each team in order and all the judges' rankings are then combined together using the 'Skating System' to achieve a final set of results.  The  'Skating System' is complicated, but in general terms with nine judges, a majority of 5 best places is used to decide the overall winner.  For instance if a team got five 1st placings they would be the winners.  However, if two teams each got four 1st placing each, the winners would be based on the team with the most 2nd placings, and so on.  This means that a team need five good placings, and their lowest four are less important unless teams tie.

UKA Cheerleading Competition - Sunday 10th April 2011 - Blackpool Winter Gardens

Congratulations to the DWP Cheerleading teams who competed at the Sandersons UKA Cheerleading Competition at the Blackpool Winter Gardens on Sunday 10th April 2011.  The DWP teams once again produced another set of impressive results.
